Memoir of a Thirteen-Year-Old Girl

Surviving the Cambodian Genocide

Ee and Hong 1976 – Their first week after arriving in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ee and Hong

These are my brothers Mark Chhi, and Ken Chhi, their first week in the USA 1976.

The picture was taken in the backyard of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hammer (Audrey Hammer). The Hammer family was so brave to take my brothers into their home, as they were two young teenage boys who knew very little of America and hardly spoke a word of English.

Thanks to Mark Jr., Janet, Sharon, and Nancy, who shared with us, all the stories and memories that we now pass down to our children for good laughs. Like when Hong used ketchup for salad dressing, and how Mrs. Hammer pinched Janet under the table to not laugh or say a word.

We are so blessed to have families like The Hammers to give us a helping hand.
