Memoir of a Thirteen-Year-Old Girl

Surviving the Cambodian Genocide

Our Family June 1979 - This picture was taken the first week after Em, Chenda and I have arrived in USA, in front of our apartment in Lincoln Nebraska. Left to right: Hong, Chenda, Em, me and Ee.

Our Family 1979

This photo was taken days after arriving in the United States; probably still feeling jet-lag, and we were more comfortable in our own sarongs than blue jeans.  It was such a wonderful feeling to be together again and to be blessed with a second chance, but not my mother (Em).  I imagine that Em was wishing my younger brother and my father were with us.  She was probably frightened and worried about how she would raise four kids on her own in this new country without any savings.  Her uncertainty and concern is clearly evident.
